L.A. Art Book Fair

On a last moment whirlwind trip to L.A. for my new gig, I saw the city in a new light (with sunglasses on of course). The L.A. Art Book Fair  organized by Printed Matter was quite a trip in itself. I got to soak it all in.  Cool people making cool stuff.

The World of Arnold Lobel

The (wonderful) World of Arnold Lobel is on display at The Contemporary Jewish Museum now through March 23rd.  I grew up on his books, illustrations, his adventures portrayed by anthropomorphic characters, his world at the end of his pencil. Seeing his original drawings and peeking into his writing process was a much needed dose of inspiration. While I’ve always enjoyed the adventures of best friends Frog and Toad, my new favorite is The Ice Cream Cone Coot and Other Rare Birds featuring  part bird- part thing creatures such as the Gramophone Gullfinch.

Letterpress + Trains

I was lucky enough to take quick trip up to Portland, OR and attend a couple of design week events. My favorite event was the Letterpress Fair held in the Oregon Rail Heritage Museum. They even steamrolled woodcut prints! Two of my passions: printing and trains!

Alvin Lustig Book Covers

While searching for a better copy (cover, font size, and paper weight) of The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles, I discovered the brilliant book covers designs of Alvin Lustig. The book covers he designed for New Directions are modern and geographic with a sense of playfulness. Not to mention he designed covers for many of my favorite authors. If only I could get my hands on a New Directions copy of the Sheltering Sky with his cover design. I might have to settle for these postcards for now.

René Bouché: Letters from Post-War Paris

One more reason to go to the Legion of Honor if you’re in town. René Bouché gives a glimpse into everyday life in war torn Paris through illustrations accompanied by hand written text. Illustration journalism. He then left Paris for New York to depict a more glamorous life for Vogue. Both are spot on.
