Stanley Kubrick at LACMA

I popped down to L.A./L.B. this past weekend to visit a dear friend. We ventured to LACMA to take in the Stanley Kubrick Exhibit. At first thought, it inspired me to watch all of his films in sequential order. At second thought, I realized doing so would most likely induce insanity. Either way, I will devote more time to his films immediately. My favorite details were the film shot lists, typed/handwritten letters, and photographs. Especially, regarding an infamous pie fight scene that was cut from Dr. Strangelove. Oh how I wish I could witness such a scene!

Baker Beach

This past week has been a whirlwind of good weather in every part of the city. Normally, we have various weather patterns geographically. It might be sunny and warm in the Mission but cold and foggy at the beach. On rare occasions it is warm and sunny everywhere, which leads residents to drop everything and head outdoors. Baker Beach is a top priority on days like these. It is the vantage point where the Pacific Ocean meets the San Francisco Bay signified by a well-known bridge. It is also a nice place to read the Sunday Times.

To my pleasant surprise there was an illustrated Baudelaire shout out in the Travel section dedicated to European walks. Best day!

Meyer Lemon Curd

I am finally utilizing The Art of Simple Foods by Alice Waters again. The succinct simplistic tone of each recipe has been a nice contrast to chaos in other parts of life. Meyer lemon curd is the perfect translation of such things: tart but sweet. It’s best in small batches since it needs to be consumed within a week, due to eggs being a main ingredient.

Library Cards

Libraries have a special place in my heart. I miss the card catalog filing systems typed in courier and the library cards you’d sign when checking out a book. Seeing the names and signatures of the borrower’s before me with the stamped date, made each read a silently shared experience.

Angel Island Part II

Apart from the picturesque views and hiking trails, Angel Island is full of buildings in various states of decay. It’s fascinating to see a building naturally go back to the earth, weathered by life and time. It takes many years to peels back all the layers. Somehow I’ve always found, ‘stairs to nowhere’ intriguing. They once lead to somewhere.

This structure is in the most severe decline. I stood there… but it did not fall.

Angel Island

Angel Island is a California State Park in the middle of the big bay. It has seen many bygone eras and the remnants of old buildings tell it’s historical past. There are bike trails, hiking trails, and a handful of coveted camping sites. I was lucky enough to have a friend reserve a campsite 6 months in advance! We took a ferry from Tiboron with our home on our backs and hiked to the campsite. Perched on the east side of the island, I sat in amazement taking in the expansive view of San Francisco to Richmond. There had been threatening rain clouds hovering amongst bursts of sun and then it appeared…. a DOUBLE RAINBOW coming out of treasure island (obviously where the pot of gold was). A sign of good luck, I hope!

Reserve your spot now for October! Actually, that’s not a bad idea. It’s our Indian Summer.
